Sweden wants to hold on to the right to enforce border controls, which would otherwise become illegal according to EU free movement rules.

The country is set to submit a letter to the European Commission Monday requesting the right to prolong current ID checks.

Swedish Radio news reports that the letter is also signed by Germany, France, Denmark and Belgium. The countries want the option to extend existing border controls for six months as well as the ability to add six-month extensions over a total period of two...
