Sweden surpasses refugee record set in 1992

More than 86,000 people have sought asylum in Sweden this year, which is higher than any other year in Sweden, the nation's Migration Agency reports.

The previous record was set in 1992, when more than 84,000 people sought asylum here due to the fighting in the former Yugoslavia.

On Monday, the Swedish Migration Agency said it has registered asylum applications from 86,223 people in 2015. Many on them hail from war-torn Syria, Afghanistan and other parts of the Middle East and Africa.
