Unaccompanied refugee children forced to sleep on gym floors

More than 1300 unaccompanied minors have applied for asylum in Sweden during the week gone by. In Malmö some of the children had to sleep in gym halls Thursday night.

“By the weekend we’ll need around 300 new beds,” Annelie Larsson, Malmö’s city manager, tells the newspaper Sydsvenskan.

There’s similar pressure on several other municipalities to find housing. Malmö, Mölndal, Sigtuna, and Solna have been given exemptions from taking on more unaccompanied minors, unless they have a connection to the community.

The Migration Board writes in a press release that more municipalities may receive exemptions.
