Increased police force to curb violence in southern Sweden

Southern Sweden will strengthen its police force with 90 new officers this summer and another 100 in January in response to escalating crime in the region, including repeated hand grenade attacks and shootings in the city of Malmö, news agency TT reports.

National Police Commissioner Dan Eliasson informed Malmö police commissioner Stefan Sintéus and regional police head Annika Stenberg about the changes in a meeting on Wednesday.

"Police in the south are our priority and will receive most of the new police officers in 2015 and 2016," Eliasson tells regional newspaper Sydsvenskan.
