Support for a legal ban against begging in Sweden has increased dramatically in only six months, according to newspaper Aftonbladet. A survey by the tabloid suggests that almost half of Swedes would like parliament to act.

But Prime Minister Stefan Löfven, whose government has appointed a national coordinator to map the extent of begging in the country, gave the proposal the thumbs down.

"Legislating against poverty won't do anything. We must do something completely different," he says to Aftonbladet. He added that it was important to continue to work with the government of Romania.
