Mathematical algorithms will be used for the first time in Sweden to increase the number of kidney transplants, reports Swedish Radio's local P4 Malmöhus channel.

These algorithms are meant to help the healthcare authorities match living donors with the right patients.

The process, which could lead to an increase of 50 transplants every year, is quite simple. For example, if a donor and a patient are matched, but have differing blood types, there may be another donor-patient couple somewhere else in the country facing the same problem.
