Malmö loses millions to protect rare toad

A species of endangered green-spotted toad has decided to set up home in the southern city of Malmö, losing the local council SEK 6 million every year.

This is because an old industrial harbour area "Norra hamnen" has been made into a nature reserve to protect the 760 toads. They form the second biggest colony in Sweden, reports newspaper Sydsvenskan.

But this council-owned property could have been rented out. It is 153,000 square metres and would have raised millions for the city.
