Swedish reporter on trial for people smuggling

Fredrik Önnevall is a reporter at SVT and formerly their China correspondent.

A Swedish TV reporter goes on trial on Thursday for people smuggling, after he helped a Syrian teenager get to Sweden from Greece.

The incident was filmed and broadcast as part of an SVT documentary on the rise of nationalism. The journalist, Fredrik Önnevall, admits bringing the 15-year-old boy to Sweden but says it was justified on humanitarian grounds, as otherwise the asylum seeker would have made his way to Sweden by jumping onto a moving lorry, and possibly died.
